Accommodation Reviews

Toronto is a city that is always changing. Our population may be growing in some areas but declining in others. These changes affect our schools. This is why it is critical that we plan ahead.

To manage change, the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø developed the Long-Term Program and Accommodation Strategy (LTPAS). The strategy document is updated and presented to the Board of Trustees each year for approval.

The LTPAS includes different types of processes:

Boundary Change Reviews

All residential addresses in Toronto are assigned to a specific school. Local neighborhood schools have attendance areas defined by boundaries that are used to establish admission to a school’s regular program.

Boundaries between schools can be changed to reduce overcrowding, use surplus space and/or assign addresses to a closer school.

Emerging Capital Priority Project

A school becomes an emerging capital priority if it is significantly over-utilized, is projected to remain over-utilized for the next ten years or is surrounded by schools that are fully utilized.

When area schools do not have available space, there is no opportunity to reduce the over-utilized school’s pressure by moving students there. The best solution is to add more space through a capital project such as an addition or a new building.

Program Area Review

This process looks at the programs offered at a school or grouping of schools and identifies program gaps or space needs.

A review may involve looking at different options to increase access to programs including:

  • The establishment of new schools;
  • The introduction of new specialized programs; or
  • Possible changes to the grades offered at schools.

More information about Program Area Reviews can be found in this brochure.

Pupil Accommodation Reviews

A Pupil Accommodation Review involves studying anunder-used school or group of schools. The review considers ways to reduce space that is not being used and ensure that students have access to strong programs. It may result in the large movement of students between schools or a possible school closure.
