Renewal Needs Backlog and Facility Condition Index

Parents now have access to updated data on the condition of our schools.

This information is posted on the ԹϺ website annually consistent with our commitment to increase transparency and accountability. It also aligns with the ԹϺ’s Open Data initiative aimed to implement an online platform where the public can access published Board data. The data corresponds to the 2023 calendar year.

In 2016, the ԹϺ (ԹϺ) became, what is thought to be, the first school board in Ontario to post each school’s and Renewal Needs Backlog.

What you Need to Know

  • The Renewal Needs Backlog list does not represent a health or safety concern for students or staff.
  • The Facility Condition Index rating does not reflect on the safety of a school building.
  • This data is collected by an independent consultant hired by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
  • Approximately 50 percent of our schools are over 60 years old and building components continue to age requiring major repairs or replacement.
  • Sixty four of our schools are older than 95 years, including seven that were built before 1900.
  • Our Renewal Needs Backlog (RNB) was approximately $4.2 billion as of March 2023.

How to View the Data

You can find the information for your school by name or address by visiting our  page. On each individual school web page you will see a ”Renewal Needs and FCI” link in the navigation menu on the left side of the page. That link will take you directly to the Renewal Needs Backlog (list of school building repairs) and the Facility Condition Index rating.

Please note that some of the items that would compromise the security of our buildings were redacted. These items include, but are not limited to, security systems and fire alarms.
