Project in focus: the Crescent Town elementary school site revitalization

Crescent Town Elementary School serves a large number of new Canadians living in surrounding high-rise apartment towers. It was built on top of a steep slope, situated on a former landfill site.ÌýFor many years, students played soccer on the side of the muddy hill at the front of the school. To create a better recreational environment, the project set out to create a new artificial turf field that was built into the side of the slope.ÌýWhen completed, the field will provide students with a high quality, level playing surface, alongside additional enhancements including a new play structure. The project is currently under construction and when it’s finished, will create a new space for students to experience the joy of sport.

Project in focus: the Three Valleys Public SchoolÌýKindergarten and play equipment replacement project

Three Valleys Public School had an unfenced, informal Kindergarten area situated between an existing junior play structure and a sports field. The play structure had reached the end of its lifespan and was in need of replacing when it was considered no longer safe.

The revitalization of two areas simultaneously created a more spacious fenced-in Kindergarten area separated with an adjacent junior play structure and play area. Both areas are fully accessible with an asphalt path enclosing the two play spaces, with a concrete access ramp providing access to each play space.

Wood climbing features, built largely from locally sourced lumber, were incorporated into the design as were sand play, storage and a manufactured metal structure. Both play areas were intentionally located to benefit from the shade of exiting trees. Additional trees were also planted to enhance the canopy and biodiversity of the adjacent ravine and the project was completed in the summer of 2024.

Climate action

Since 2021, the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø has created an annual Climate Action Report outlining strategic actions planned for the upcoming school year that are designed to respond to the climate crisis. The ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø’s next Climate Action Annual Report was planned to go to the Board of Trustees in Fall 2024 and will chart a path forward to address the ongoing effects of climate change.
