Experiential learning gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through hands-on experience. Over the past year, we’ve expanded the number of opportunities that allow students to build valuable knowledge, essential skills, work habits, technical literacy and networks, both in and outside of the classroom.
Skills Ontario competitions for elementary and secondary students
The ԹϺ was awarded the “Skills Ontario School Board Award of Distinction” for the past two consecutive years. The is presented to aboard that shows dedication to the promotion of skilled trades and technology careers.
To determine whotypically receives theaward, every secondary school competitor in the top ten ranking who scores over 60 per cent, earns points. The award is then presented annually to theboard with the highest score.
Receiving this recognitionis a sign of a school board’s ongoingcommitment to supporting students who are interested in pursuing a wide range of careers in the skilled trades and technologies. Hands-on learning is necessary within Ontario to support a healthy and stable workforce for the future, and school boards receiving this award are leading the way.
Skills Ontario challenges
By June 2024, 250 students from grades four to eight had participated in the ԹϺ Elementary Skills Ontario Challenge through events focussed on construction, green energy, robotics, and technology. Each challenge gave students a chance to apply the problem-solving skills they develop through the Ontario Science and Technology curriculum.
Teams had an opportunity to advance to the provincial skills event at the Toronto Congress Centre in May. Here is a look at the number of ԹϺ secondary student competitors who participated in the over the past five years:
- 2019-20 = 318 competitors
- 2022-23 = 178 were board-level competitors, in return to in-person competition
- 2023-24 = 236 students were board-level competitors;
The Specialist High Skills Major Student Digital Animation Festival
On May 14, 2024, the Experiential Learning Special High Skills Major Team launched the inaugural Student Digital Animation Festival. Around 240 students attendedalongside guest speakers and panelists at the Cineplex Odeon on Yonge Street at Sheppard Avenue.
Students from both schools created content using the software and hardware acquired through the program, with support from their Specialist High Skills Major teachers and community partners, including ToonBoom Animation, Seneca College, Sheridan College, CORUS Entertainment, Lakeside Animation Studios, WACOM, and Inspiretech Canada.
The students’ work was a central focus, with screenings running in the morning session, followed by an Industry Panel discussion in the afternoon with networking. Former ԹϺ students who are now working in the animation industry also attended, sharing their career and education journeys, which had a tremendously positive impact on everyone present.
Success in the School Within a College program
The School Within a College program is a partnership between the ԹϺ and several GTA colleges. Its primary aim is to support students who are looking to re-engage through an adult learning environment and reach their academic potential moving towards earning their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
SWAC is designed to offer students the opportunity to earn 4+ credits in a semester alongside their home school. Students remain registered and supported by their home school throughout.
In the 2023-2024 school year, we were able to re-engage 148 grade 12 students across four college campuses, with an overall success rate of 95%. A total of 89 students reached graduation and another 55 students were identified as having the potential to graduate by the end of the school year.
