Secondary French Programs

Students may continue Core French, Extended French (Grades 10-12)*Ìýand the French Immersion studies at the secondary level for Grades 9-12.Ìý

*Note: The Extended French Program is currently phasing out. There is no new Grade 9 Extended French as of September 2025.

Certificates
The ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø offers a certificate to all students who successfully complete the Core French, Extended French and French Immersion programs. Below you will find the descriptions of those certificates.Ìý

  • Core French: Students who complete all 4 credits (Grades 9-12) in Core French qualify for a Certificate of Achievement in Core French. Most secondary schools offer Core French through Grade 12.

  • Extended French: To qualify for the Certificate of Bilingual Studies (Extended French) students must complete 7 credits in French (4 credits in Extended French and 3 credits in subject courses where French is the language of instruction). Students completing 8 or more credits in French qualify for an Honours Certificate of Bilingual Studies (Extended French).

  • French Immersion: To qualify for the Certificate of Bilingual Studies (French Immersion) students must complete 10 credits in French (4 credits in French Immersion and 6 credits in subject courses where French is the language of instruction). Students completing 11 or more credits in French qualify for an Honours Certificate of Bilingual Studies (French Immersion).

Program Locations

Access to secondary Extended French* and French Immersion programs for students currently in French Immersion or Extended French* in the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø isÌýdesignated through aÌýpathwayÌýfrom the Grade 8 school.

Please note:ÌýDue to changes to the Out-of-Area Admissions procedure, students in French Immersion/Extended FrenchÌýprograms at a school other than their French program school based on their address, must return to their designated pathway school by address for middle/secondary school. If students wish to attend a middle/secondary French Immersion/Extended French program that is not associated with their address, they must apply to that school via the Out-of-Area Admissions process.

Students not currently in a ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø school but who wish to attend a ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø secondary school for French Immersion or Extended French may inquire directly at the secondary school. Admission MAY be granted (but cannot be guaranteed) based on the following criteria:

  • Available space
  • Equivalent background in French
