Since 2012, ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø Multilingual Language Learners have participated in the Secondary English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Literacy Development (ELD) Speech Competition, an initiative that places student voice at the forefront.
Speeches start in the ESL/ELD classroom and culminate in a showcase where students present in front of peers from across the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø. Celebrations of their successes occur at the classroom, school and Board levels, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment.
By participating, students engage in authentic communication tasks that reflect the ESL/ELD curriculum's focus on both oral and written communication, helping them meet and exceed the standards set for developing language proficiency and critical thinking skills.
This year, the ESL/ELD Speech Competition Finals were hosted at Central Technical School (CTS) on Friday, December 13. CTS’s Hospitality program catered a delicious lunch, and prizes were provided by the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø ESL/ELD Department, as well as the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø’s Community Services Essential Skills Upgrading program.
