Weston CI Students Help Shape the Weston Loop

Categories: News

Students from Weston Collegiate Institute recently came together with SvN Architects to share their insight and ideas for , a 4-kilometer multi-use trail connecting 74 acres of green spaces. This initiative aims to enhance the accessibility and appeal of Weston’s much-loved parks, creating safer, more inclusive community spaces. Chester Rennie of SvN Architects shared, “This is not how normally how renewals are conducted, but we are trying a different approach, and wanted to get [the student] voice and perspective on [their] very own home, Weston."

Student-Driven Ideas for Park Improvements

During the session, students proposed ideas to make local parks more welcoming, for example:

  • Safety Enhancements: Lighting, emergency buttons, and patrol officers.
  • Accessibility: Ramps, seating, and winter heating rooms.
  • Community Features: Equipment rentals, dog-friendly areas, and multi-season spaces like volleyball courts that double as ice rinks.

Students also shared personal experiences in the community, including how they wished parks had easier access and clearer routs, and noting that taking better care of the parks would improve safety.

Student Activity Council Advisor and Teacher at Weston CI Jyoti Turna shared, “… As we always say, "home is Weston" and [the students] are now getting a chance to make significant change in their home." This collaboration shows the power of community-driven design. By listening to student voices, the Weston Loop is set to transform these parks into vibrant spaces for all.

A group of students and two architects collaborate around a large table in a classroom. The table holds a detailed map with colorful markings, sticky notes, and highlighters. One of the architects leans over the table, pointing to a specific spot on the map while explaining. Additional students in the background are engaged in similar group discussions.
