June is National Indigenous History Month

During the month of June, people across the country mark National Indigenous History Month in recognition of the rights, histories and extraordinary achievements of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The unique cultures and perspectives of First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities are celebrated nationally and locally.

Selected opportunities to participate in Indigenous-Focused Events in the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø:

June 20 - All Nations Community Pow Wow (Jiingtamok)
Kâpapâmahchakwêw - Wandering Spirit School in collaboration with the Urban Indigenous Education Centre presents an All Nations Community Pow Wow on Thursday June 20, 2019 at 16 Phin Ave, Toronto, ON.

Invited Drum: Eagle Heart and Sun Spirit
Head Dancers: Deanne and John Hupfield
Elder: Pauline Shirt
Grand Entry: 12:00 noon Feast: 5:00 p.m.

June 21 - National Indigenous Peoples Day
On June 21, the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø also recognizes National Indigenous Peoples Day. ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø staff are asked to be considerate of Indigenous students who are participating in ceremonies and / or cultural events on June 21st. June 21st is a day of significance for many Indigenous Peoples in Canada. It marks the day when the Sun is closest to the Earth. It is the longest day of the year and the shortest night. June 21st is also National Indigenous Day. Many cultures celebrate Summer Solstice including many Indigenous people in Canada. It is a time that reminds us to remain grounded, humble and appreciative. It is celebrated by coming together with family and community for a feast. Traditional foods are an important aspect of the feast as the traditional food signifies connection to the land and animals. June 26 - 12th Annual South East Scarborough Pow Wow
The Urban Indigenous Education Centre in collaboration with the South East Scarborough Community presents the 12th Annual South East Scarborough Pow Wow on June 26th, 2019 at Eastview Public School, 20 Waldock Street (Scarborough).

Sunrise Ceremony: 5:30 a.m. conducted by Jimmy Dick
Children’s Activities: 10 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
Grand Entry: 12:00 noon and closing Ceremony and Feast: 5 p.m.
Elder: Pauline Shirt
Invited Drums: All Nations, Smoke Trail, Big Smoke, All Nations Jr’s and Sun Spirit
Head Dancers: Clarity Smoke & Wassnadeh Recollet
