Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) - SHaSAM

We offer a SHSM in Arts and Culture, a Ministry approved program in Grade 11 and 12 which combines arts education with experiential learning. SHaSAM consists of a package of 8 courses, including work experience in an Arts Internship outside the school, and Certifications with visiting guest artists. Graduates receive a distinct OSSD diploma with a SHSM designation.

WHAT SETS US APART

Our Mentor program sets us apart and will help you succeed.  Your Mentor teacher will serve as your listener, coach and guide for four years of high school.  Mentor activities include food and nutrition, walks, the Terry Fox Run, Literacy Test preparation, environmental initiatives, and other activities to support student well-being.

Our emphasis on student well-being sets us apart as we aim to educate in a caring and supportive atmosphere with Mindfulness and Strength Based Resilience activities as a key component of our Mentor Classes. Workshops on time and stress management encourage students to make healthy choices and develop time management skills.

Our unique timetable sets us apart as students have the opportunity to get the individual attention they need to achieve, succeed and excel.  Four weekly clinic periods provide students with time for self-directed learning and independent study, as well as time for individual instruction, enrichment, and remediation support.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We encourage parent involvement and are proud of our active School Council. Research shows that when parents are involved in their children's education, children perform better academically in school.

We keep our parents informed and involved through monthly School Council meetings, Parent/Teacher Conferences at mid-semester, presentations to parents by Student Services regarding post-secondary education, option selection and other topics, and regular parental contact by teachers and administrators to support at-risk students.

R.H. King's has many community partners, including Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre; OISE/UofT; Providence Centre; Friends of the Rouge River Valley; United Way; Canadian Cancer Society; St.George's Manor Seniors' Residence; Queen's University; Youthlink/Pathways to Education; UNICEF; Mindfulness Everyday; CANTYD; and Cycle Toronto.
