How to become a licensed hairstylist in Toronto

You can turn your interest in hairstyling into a career with Studio 500! We provide training that can prepare you for a career in hairstyling – tuition-free – or launch your career with an apprenticeship.

Become a fully certified and licensed hairstylist with Ministry-accredited hairstylist pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs with Studio 500. We are an approved training delivery agent for the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD).

Based in Etobicoke, Toronto, Studio 500 welcomes learners from across the Greater Toronto Area to train as a hairstylist. Download our Program Flyer here.

What you get when you train at Studio 500:

We provide our participants:

  • An internationally-recognized program for a Red Seal Trade – You can take this skill and certification anywhere around the world!
  • Tuition-free learning for our pre-apprenticeship program participants.
  • $400 class fee for registered apprentices to join our apprenticeship program.
  • a complete tool kit, including everything you need to be successful during your training.
  • textbook with training material.

Which program is right for you: Pre-Apprenticeship or Apprenticeship

Our pre-apprenticeship program is a 22-week program that offers hands-on training followed by an eight-week salon field placement. After completing a pre-apprenticeship program, you will have completed the Level 1 training which can entice an employer to officially register you as an apprentice and allow you to complete Level 2 training.

To become a hairstylist apprentice:

  • Find an employer to hire and sponsor your training.
  • Sign a training agreement with your employer that is prepared by an Apprenticeship Branch consultant.

Our apprenticeship program includes hairstyling theory and hands-on training. We offer part-time and full-time classes. You can earn while you gain training, too.

Our program will prepare you for the Certificate of Qualification Examination for Hairstylists in Ontario, so you can become a fully licensed hairstylist in Ontario.

COVID-19 Protocols

As a salon and hairstylist apprenticeship program, we recognize the critical need to implement and follow Covid-19 protocols. Below are the protocols we’re following to ensure the health and safety of our staff, learners, and community members.

  1. We will continue to also offer virtual services, where possible.
  2. In-person service is limited, so one-on-one meetings, if required, will be available by appointment only.
  3. Classes will be offered in blended format – combination of virtual and in-person classes.
  4. Prior to entering the centre, staff and visitors are required to complete the online COVID self-assessment available at and provide a confirmation that it was completed. If anyone is feeling unwell or have any symptoms, they should not enter the centre. We encourage those with symptoms to get tested at the nearest COVID-19 Assessment Centre:
  5. All staff and visitors must wear a face mask or covering, sanitize hands and adhere to physical distancing requirements.
  6. Signage about hand washing and proper respiratory etiquette will be prominent in the centre.
  7. We ask that visitors come to the centre alone to avoid crowding.
  8. Routine cleaning of general facilities and enhanced cleaning of high touch surfaces such as door handles.
