GEORGE SYME COMMUNITY SCHOOL ADDITION

School and Childcare addition, and renovation at George Syme Community School to respond to significant accommodation changes.

Overview

Project Address: 69 Pritchard Ave, York, ON M6N 1T6

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø is renovating and building a new four (4) classroom and a five (5) room childcare addition to address the increase in enrollment pressures as a result of the grade range expansion. The addition will provide new permanent capacity for 718 students. The current George Syme CS has a JK to Grade 5 Regular track program and a SK to Grade 5 French Immersion program. The approved student accommodation plan will see both tracks expand from their current configuration up to Grade 8. In line with ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø’s commitment to equitable and inclusive spaces, the building will be a fully barrier-free accessible school with a new elevator.

Background

In March of 2018, the Ministry of Education (EDU) provided capital funding approval to construct a new four (4) classroom addition to serve 92 pupil places at George Syme Community School. The addition is required to accommodate the increase in enrollment due to the grade range expansion of the Regular and French Immersion tracks to serve all grades to Grade 8.

Since the EDU approval of the business case, ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø has completed the “Site Plan Approval Process” (SPA), detailed design of the project, received “Approval to Proceed to Tender” (ATP) from the Ministry of Education, obtained building permits from the City of Toronto, and tendered the construction to pre-qualified General Contractors.

Objectives

Once completed the school community will benefit from the following:

  • Flexibility within the facility to manage current and future enrollment pressures.
  • Permanent classroom spaces within the school to replace portables.
  • New affordable childcare that will provide economic opportunities for the community.
  • Site improvements to include appropriate play areas, new trees, and basketball hoops.
  • A fully accessible school with elevator.
